The Rural Clinical School in the Faculty of Health Science at the University of Tasmania is one of a network of 14 Rural Clinical Schools around Australia.
Funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Health and Ageing through its Regional Health Strategy, Rural Clinical Schools enable medical students to undertake training in rural environments and support health professionals working in rural areas.
The RCS is based in a stunning location in Burnie overlooking the beaches of Bass Strait and towards Table Cape. It is co-located between the North West Regional Hospital and the North West Private Hospital, providing excellent clinical training opportunities for students on-site and throughout the North West Region of Tasmania.
The RCS is committed to an integrated education model, with a balance of acute and primary care clinical training and experience in regional, rural and remote settings. The major focus is medical education integrating undergraduate and postgraduate clinical training within an interprofessional framework.
The RCS has an ongoing commitment to nursing, pharmacy, clinical psychology and other allied health professional education. The aim is to prepare clinical practitioners who are able to meet the health needs of rural and regional communities.
The RCS is facilitating the further development of locally-based research teams and works collaboratively with researchers from across Tasmania and interstate.
